Vangelis S ridden by Robert Smith once again put in a class act, this time in the Hickstead British Jumping Derby where he shared third place honours with Ben Maher on Quainton Quirifino and Tina Fletcher on Promised Land.Competing for the first time in the famous Hickstead arena and in British show jumping’s richest event with its £120,000 prize pot, Vangelis put in a valiant round stepping down the Derby Bank, clearing the rails at the bottom and then sailing through the notorious Devil’s Dyke. Vangelis notched up just 8 faults in his first ever attempt. The stallion, owned by Sharon Baldwin of Meadow Stud and Robert Smith, also finished 4th
in the Bunn Leisure Derby Trial on Friday.
Robert’s other stallion, Talan, whom he owns with Pennie Cornish, (also making his debut at Hickstead) jumped a stylish round in Saturday’s Derby Trophy sponsored by Falcon Equine Feeds to finish in the ribbons in 4th place.
